What Joseph's Plan Teaches Us About Building Stronger Retirement Fences

"The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." — Proverbs 27:12

When people ask me whether insurance is biblical, I usually answer with another question.

Was Joseph's grain storage program biblical?

Most Christians know the story in Genesis 41. Pharaoh dreamed of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. God gave Joseph the wisdom to interpret the dream, but Joseph didn't stop there.

He developed a plan.

During the seven years of plenty, Egypt gathered part of every harvest and stored it away. When famine finally arrived, they weren't scrambling to survive—they were prepared.

Joseph wasn't acting out of fear.

He was practicing faithful stewardship.

Joseph Built More Than Grain Storage

When we read Genesis 41, it's easy to focus on the grain.

But Joseph was actually protecting something much bigger.

He was protecting families.

He was protecting livelihoods.

He was protecting an economy.

He was protecting future generations.

Most importantly, God used Joseph's preparation to preserve Jacob's family—the family line that would eventually lead to Jesus Christ.

Preparation became part of God's provision.

The Seven Fence Principle

At Lone Star Legacy Insurance, we often tell clients:

You don't wait until the cows get out to build a fence.

You build the fence while everything is calm.

That's exactly what Joseph did.

He identified the coming storm before it arrived and strengthened the weak areas while there was still time.

That same principle is the foundation of the Lone Star Legacy Retirement Review System™.

Instead of looking at only one financial product, we help families evaluate seven important areas of retirement:

  • Income

  • Health Coverage

  • Taxes

  • Asset Protection

  • Legacy

  • Estate Planning

  • Long-Term Care

Think of each one as another fence surrounding your family's future.

One weak fence may not seem like a problem today.

But storms have a way of finding weak fences.

Preparation Is Not a Lack of Faith

Sometimes Christians wonder if planning ahead shows a lack of trust in God.

Scripture teaches the opposite.

Noah built an ark.

Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem's walls while posting guards.

Joseph stored grain before the famine.

In every case, God's people trusted Him enough to obey His instructions and prepare wisely.

Faith and preparation have never been enemies.

Building Fences Before the Storm

Every week I meet families who have worked hard, saved faithfully, and love their children deeply.

Yet many have never talked about long-term care.

Their beneficiaries haven't been reviewed in years.

Their estate documents are outdated.

Their retirement income hasn't been stress-tested.

No one has shown them where their weakest fence might be.

The goal of the Lone Star Legacy Retirement Review isn't to sell fear.

It's to help families discover where they are already protected—and where a fence may need strengthening before life changes unexpectedly.

Preparing for Those We Love

One of the greatest lessons from Joseph is that wise preparation isn't just about us.

It's about the people who depend on us.

A husband prepares for his wife.

Parents prepare for their children.

Families prepare for future generations.

That's why our mission goes beyond insurance products.

We help families organize, prepare, and protect what God has entrusted to them.

Because when the storm eventually comes—and every family experiences storms—we want your retirement fences standing strong.

Next in the Biblical Stewardship Series

Joseph teaches us to prepare before the famine.

Next, we'll look at another biblical principle that is just as important:

How the Bible's command to care for widows begins long before a woman becomes a widow—and why preparing today may be one of the greatest acts of love you can leave your spouse.
