Taking Care of Tomorrow's Widows: A Biblical Approach to Retirement Planning

Taking care of widows

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling." Psalm 68:5

When we think about caring for widows, most of us picture someone who has already experienced the loss of a husband. Churches often provide meals, family members step in to help, and friends offer encouragement during a difficult season.

Those acts of compassion are beautiful, and they reflect the heart of God.

But what if one of the greatest ways we could care for widows is before they become widows?

That simple question is one of the reasons I founded Lone Star Legacy Insurance and developed the Lone Star Legacy Retirement Review System™.

God's Heart Has Always Been for Widows

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly commands His people to care for widows.

James 1:27 tells us that pure religion includes caring for widows and orphans in their distress.

Isaiah 1:17 instructs believers to "seek justice... defend the fatherless, plead the widow's cause."

Paul devoted an entire section of 1 Timothy 5 to ensuring widows were cared for with dignity while also encouraging families to prepare and accept responsibility for one another.

These passages reveal something important.

God doesn't simply care about widows after tragedy strikes.

He cares about protecting families.

He cares about faithful stewardship.

He cares about wise preparation.

Today's Reality

Modern statistics help explain why this biblical principle is just as important today as it was thousands of years ago.

In the United States, women live an average of nearly five years longer than men. While every family is different, many wives will eventually face retirement without their husband by their side.

Women are also more likely to require long-term care and, on average, need that care for a longer period than men. Approximately 75% of women age 65 and older will develop significant long-term care needs, compared to about 64% of men. Women who need care also require it for an average of 3.7 years, while men average about 2.2 years.

Many older women also find themselves living alone after the loss of a spouse, making financial preparation even more important.

These numbers are not meant to create fear.

They remind us that preparation matters.

Just as Joseph stored grain before the famine arrived, families can strengthen their financial foundation before life's storms come.

Caring Before the Crisis

Over the years, I've met families who worked hard, raised children, paid their bills, and faithfully attended church.

Yet when one spouse passed away, the surviving husband or wife often faced questions they had never prepared to answer.

Where are the important documents?

How will retirement income change?

Who do I call first?

What happens to Medicare?

Will I have enough income?

How will long-term care be paid for if I need it?

Those questions are difficult under normal circumstances.

They become overwhelming during grief.

That is why I believe caring for widows begins long before widowhood.

The Seven Fences

The Lone Star Legacy Retirement Review System was designed to help families strengthen seven critical areas of retirement before life changes unexpectedly.

Income

Will retirement income continue to support the surviving spouse?

Health Coverage

Does each spouse understand Medicare, supplemental coverage, and future healthcare expenses?

Taxes

Has anyone discussed how taxes may change after the loss of a spouse?

Asset Protection

Have savings and retirement assets been positioned to help weather unexpected expenses?

Legacy

Are beneficiary designations current? Have family wishes been clearly communicated?

Estate Planning

Are wills, powers of attorney, trusts, and healthcare directives up to date through qualified legal professionals?

Long-Term Care

If one spouse requires extended care, does the family have a plan for where that care will occur and how it may be funded?

Each fence represents an area that protects the family.

When one fence is weak, the entire property becomes more vulnerable.

When all seven fences are strong, families are better prepared for whatever tomorrow may bring.

What Does a "14" Really Mean?

In our Retirement Review, each fence is scored to help identify strengths and areas needing attention.

A perfect score doesn't mean life will never bring hardship.

It doesn't guarantee that every investment will perform perfectly or that health challenges will never occur.

Instead, it means something far more valuable.

It means you have taken the time to prepare.

You've had the difficult conversations.

You've reviewed your beneficiaries.

You've coordinated with your attorney, CPA, and insurance professionals.

You've identified potential gaps before they became expensive problems.

You've built a plan that gives your family clarity instead of confusion.

If a husband passes away, his wife won't have to begin making dozens of important decisions while grieving. Instead, she has a roadmap, trusted advisors, organized documents, and a plan that was built together.

That may be one of the greatest gifts a husband can leave his wife.

Why I Do What I Do

People sometimes ask why I'm so passionate about retirement planning.

The answer is simple.

I don't sell insurance because I enjoy talking about insurance.

I do this because I care about families.

Every policy, every retirement review, every beneficiary update, every long-term care conversation has the potential to make someone's hardest day just a little easier.

If we can help prevent financial confusion...

If we can help preserve dignity...

If we can help a surviving spouse remain in her home...

If we can help children focus on caring for Mom instead of untangling financial paperwork...

Then we've accomplished something much greater than completing another insurance transaction.

We've served people.

And I believe that reflects the heart of Christ.

Build Stronger Fences Before the Storm

None of us knows what tomorrow holds.

But we can prepare for it.

The Bible consistently teaches wisdom, stewardship, and caring for those we love. The Seven Fence Retirement Review is our way of putting those principles into practice.

If your family had to face an unexpected loss tomorrow, would your spouse know what to do?

Would your retirement plan protect the one you love most?

Would your seven fences still be standing?
